Sandy Shorelines

Beach Rehabilitation Projects

Beach Rehabilitation Projects

As climate change continues to be a global existential issue, manifesting in the form of coastal erosion, sea level rise, extreme weather events etc, this poses the potential to negatively affect and increase the vulnerability of communities residing along the coastlines. Thus, the ACS-AES, with the assistance of KOICA and technical supervision KIOST, recognizes this problem and developed the sandy shorelines project, “Impact Assessment of climate change on the sandy shorelines of the Caribbean: Alternatives for its control and resilience”, which includes, under Component 4, section 4.1 Beach Rehabilitation Projects. Thus, the ACS summoned the countries participating in the project, through their Focal Points, to present candidate beaches for the preparation of three executive beach rehabilitation projects, being selected the beaches: Viento Frio, in Panama; Runaway Bay, in Antigua and Barbuda; and Bonasse, in Trinidad and Tobago. The main objective of the execution of the beach rehabilitation projects seeks to improve its environmental, functional and aesthetic conditions and to be able to understand the coastal system functioning and the application of environmentally friendly solutions.
